A grab bar in the right place is the single highest-impact safety fix in most homes—but only if it's where someone will reach for it.

Grab Bars 101: Where to Put Them and What to Buy
By the toilet: one vertical or angled bar within easy reach of a seated position, positioned for pushing up rather than pulling sideways. In the shower or tub: one bar for stepping over the threshold, and one inside for standing support, placement should match how your parent actually moves, not a generic diagram. Along a hallway or by a bed, if getting up at night is a struggle.
What matters when buying one
Weight rating: look for bars rated for at least 250 to 300 pounds, well above expected body weight, since the rating accounts for the force of someone catching themselves, not just standing weight. Material: stainless steel or textured grip surfaces hold up better in wet environments than plastic-coated bars. Length: 12 to 24 inch bars cover most placements; longer diagonal bars work well at shower entry points.
Drilled vs. no-drill options
Permanently mounted bars, screwed into wall studs or with proper wall anchors, remain the gold standard for weight-bearing safety. For renters, or anyone hesitant to drill, suction-mounted or tension-pole grab bars exist, but they're not all rated for the same weight, check the rating carefully rather than assuming any no-drill option is equally safe.
One thing to never do
Never substitute a towel bar for a grab bar. Towel bars aren't rated to hold body weight and can pull out of the wall under load, turning a safety fix into a new hazard.
Getting it installed
A stud finder and basic tools handle most bathroom installations in under an hour. If the wall doesn't have a stud where you need the bar, a mounting plate designed for this purpose spreads the load—a hardware store employee or the product instructions can point you to the right one.
